Profile

Overview
The Schomburg Center is looking for highly organized, curious, motivated undergraduates, graduates, and graduate/professional school students eager to learn and collaborate within our archival research, collecting, and educational areas. Mentees gain experience in our five research divisions and engagement with fellows, scholars, curators, and professional staff. These three (3) paid interns, working collaboratively and reporting to a mentor/supervisor, will research and prepare Gender and Race Equity programs and digital and physical exhibitions to illuminate the roles of women of color as we mark the centenary of the passage of the 19th Amendment. Mentees will gain first-hand experience with Black history and culture, and a window into Black librarianship and African and African American Studies, which owes its start to the Schomburg Center.
Principal Responsibilities
Under the supervision of a staff supervisor/mentor, the Mentee: 

Works collectively with other mentees and staff on the Ella Baker Initiative 
Understands, prepares, and conducts archival research on voting and civil rights activism 
Hones and develops new skills to prepare findings for exhibition and public discourse 
Prepares programs and exhibitions focusing on the 19th Amendment and the role of women of color 
Supports and works with staff on logistics and tasks within a given division/department

Required Education & Experience
Current enrollment in degree program or proof of recent post-secondary graduation
Minimum Qualifications

Strong organizational and computer skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills
Teamwork, attention to detail, and professionalism in appearance, communication, and conduct

Demonstrated reliability, and ability to work both independently and within a diverse team
Additional skills such as digital media, editing, languages, and library services a plus

Daily use of a computer, research skills, and some pushing/pulling of book carts and racks

Preferred Qualifications

Interest, experience, or related coursework in library, research, and/or information services 
Interest and study in African American and African Diaspora history and culture a plus
Career interests in archival work/research, librarianship, or related profession a plus
